Tamron Announces the 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD

Tamron has revealed its 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD for Sony E-Mount. Moving away from the ‘traditional’ 70-200mm, Tamron has attempted to produce a better all-round lens that provides high-quality characteristics in all aspects. If you’re looking for sharp images, lightweight design, silent motor system and a good balance between photo and video capability for Sony E-Mount cameras, this could be a lens for you.

The new Tamron 70-180mm F/2.8 Di III VXD telephoto zoom lens is the third in Tamron’s line-up of fast F2.8 zoom lens created for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. It’s compact and light-weight design is in keeping with the smaller size of modern mirrorless cameras, making it easier to carry and use, whilst still excelling optically with impressive focus response speeds.

Promising fast focus and quiet performance

To help achieve pin-sharp focus, the newly developed VXD [Voice-coil eXtreme-torque drive] linear motor focus mechanism produces an autofocus drive that is quieter and quicker than ever before making it ideal for fast-moving subjects and also great for video. In addition, a floating system is used to achieve excellent optical performance at all shooting distances. By simultaneously operating two VXD units via electronic control, the system produces impressive optical performance throughout the focus and zoom range.

Construction of the Tamron 70-180mm VXD lens includes several special lens elements that contribute to its superb imaging performance. The very short 0.85m MOD [Minimum Object Distance] expands its overall versatility as well, making it great for close up’s too. Its 67mm filter diameter is also common with other Tamron lenses for Sony E mount full-frame cameras, adding to user convenience when having a range of Tamron lenses in this series.

Other features that support a great shooting experience include Moisture-Resistant Construction for added weather protection and Fluorine coating to the front element for easy maintenance. In addition, the 70-180mm F/2.8 is fully compatible with various camera-specific features including Fast Hybrid AF and Eye AF.

Developed under the concept of ‘making large aperture zoom lenses user-friendly’, the70-180mm F/2.8 provides users with a great portrait & telephoto option to complement the existing 17-28mm F/2.8 RXD wide-angle zoom and the 28-75mm F/2.8 RXD standard zoom lens.
