CVP and Canon UK & Ireland have revealed the winners of the esteemed Stories in Motion Young Filmmakers Awards for 2024. Designed to celebrate and encourage the creative flair of emerging filmmakers aged 18 to 25, the awards honour the finest short films crafted by promising new talents with a passion for storytelling and cinema.

The competition attracted an impressive array of submissions from across the UK and Ireland. The judging panel, featuring Canon Ambassador Elisa Iannacone and Canon Ambassador Tania Freimuth, expressed enthusiasm for entries that showcased distinct artistic voices and storytelling prowess, particularly those with a human-centric narrative. The competition’s selection committee also included CVP’s Technical Marketing Manager, Jake Ratcliffe, and Award-winning Filmmaker, Editor, and Colourist, Ollie Kenchington.

The winning projects in the Documentary, Music Video, and Scripted Short categories are as follows:

  • Documentary: “A Perceptual Phenomenon” by James Hubbard
  • Music Video: “To Night” by Yu-Ming Huang
  • Scripted Short: “REBIRTH” by Joel Claude

The accomplishments of the winners and nominees were honoured at a special ceremony hosted by British television presenter Alex Zane on April 25th at Everyman Theatre Broadgate. Additionally, James Hubbard received the overall “Grand Prize” award. Winners receive a range of prizes, including a Canon EOS C70 camera, RF 24-70 F2.8 L lens, a £500 voucher for CVP, and the opportunity to shadow an award-winning filmmaker. Shortlisted projects also receive a £200 voucher for use at CVP.

Ollie Kenchington, one of the judges, expressed delight at the calibre of submissions, praising the partnership between CVP and Canon for nurturing emerging talent. Dawn Bochenski, Marketing Director at CVP, highlighted the collaboration’s commitment to supporting young filmmakers by providing access to top-tier resources and mentorship. The volume and quality of submissions this year underscore the passion and skill of the next generation of content creators, exceeding expectations.
